Floor Grinding and Floor Preparation — Dust Extraction and COSHH Compliance
Floor grinding, scarifying, shot blasting and surface preparation are among the highest-risk RCS (Respirable Crystalline Silica) exposure tasks in construction and flooring. Concrete floors contain 25–50% silica. Grinding and scarifying generates sustained RCS clouds — far exceeding the Workplace Exposure Limit of 0.1mg/m³ within seconds of starting without on-tool extraction.
HSE conducted over 1,000 site inspections in 2026 targeting silica dust. Floor preparation work is within scope. Contractors grinding without adequate dust controls are receiving prohibition notices — work stops on the spot.
The COSHH requirement
For floor grinding where wet suppression is impractical — indoor environments, preparation for floor coatings, polished concrete — on-tool M-Class extraction is the compliant engineering control. The extraction must be M-Class certified, connected directly to the tool through the grinder's dust shroud, matched for airflow to the tool, and documented in the COSHH assessment and method statement.
Floor preparation tasks and dust risk
| Task | Material | RCS risk | Required class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor grinding | Concrete, screed | Very high | M-Class minimum |
| Scarifying / scabbling | Concrete | Very high | M-Class minimum |
| Shot blasting | Concrete, steel | High | M-Class minimum |
| Diamond drilling / core drilling | Concrete, stone | High | M-Class minimum |
| Floor tile removal | Ceramic, stone, adhesive | High — check adhesive for asbestos | M-Class or H-Class |
| Polished concrete finishing | Concrete | Medium-high | M-Class minimum |
| Old floor coating removal | Resin, paint | Medium-high — check for lead paint | M-Class or H-Class |
Recommended equipment for floor preparation
Core drilling
Core drilling through concrete generates concentrated RCS at the drill bit. PTO (power tool take-off) is the practical specification — the extractor starts automatically when the drill starts, the auto filter shaker maintains suction on long drilling runs. Core drill vacuum attachment rings create a sealed connection around the drill bit for maximum capture.
