Hull — local materials and cleaning considerations
- East Yorkshire chalk — the Yorkshire Wolds geology north of Hull is Cretaceous chalk. Chalk was used in some historic Hull and East Riding farm buildings. Very soft — extremely sensitive to pressure washing, which destroys chalk surface rapidly.
- Red brick — Hull's Victorian and Edwardian housing is almost entirely red brick. Post-war Hull — rebuilt significantly after heavy wartime bombing — used red brick and concrete extensively. Standard medium-pressure cleaning applies.
- Humber tidal contamination — any cleaning on dockside or riverside structures must account for tidal contamination in runoff. Environmental Permitting particularly important for wash-down near the tidal Humber.
