Confined spaces in utilities — pumping stations, tanks and vaults
Water and wastewater utilities regularly require cleaning inside confined spaces — pump sumps, valve vaults, storage tanks, culverts and inspection chambers. The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 require a risk assessment before entry, appropriate rescue arrangements in place, and equipment that is suitable for use in the confined space. Pressure washing and vacuum equipment used inside confined spaces must be rated for the atmosphere — where flammable or explosive gases may be present (methane in wastewater), ATEX-rated equipment is required.
