Oxford — local materials and cleaning considerations

  • Headington Stone (Coral Rag limestone) — a Jurassic oolitic and coral rag limestone from the Headington quarries — the defining material of Oxford's college buildings. Merton, Magdalen, New College and Christ Church are all Headington Stone. Silica-containing — cutting and repair generates RCS dust requiring H-Class extraction. Medium to low pressure only — avoid concentrating pressure on friable oolitic surfaces.
  • Clunch — soft chalk limestone used in some older Oxford collegiate buildings, particularly internal fabric. Extremely sensitive to pressure or chemical cleaning.
  • Cleaning specification — low to medium pressure for Headington Stone. No acid-based cleaners on limestone or chalk. Cleaning runoff must not reach the Thames (Isis), Cherwell or Oxford's millstreams under Environmental Permitting.
