Lincoln — local materials and cleaning considerations
- Lincoln Limestone (Lincolnshire Limestone) — the defining material of Lincoln's hilltop cathedral city. Lincolnshire Limestone is an oolitic limestone from the Inferior Oolite formation — the same geological series as Bath Stone and Cotswold limestone but from the Lincolnshire outcrop. Used in Lincoln Cathedral (one of the world's finest Gothic cathedrals), Lincoln Castle, the Bail and the Newport Arch Roman gate. Pale cream to grey-buff — requires low-pressure cleaning to avoid surface erosion. No acid cleaners.
- Red brick — Lincoln's Victorian and Edwardian residential areas and commercial buildings are predominantly red brick from Lincolnshire clay. The lower city (Wigford, St Mark's, Sincil Bank) is characteristically red brick. Standard medium-pressure cleaning for brick facades.
- Lincolnshire Ironstone — the iron-rich brown Jurassic ironstone used in some Lincolnshire village churches and farm buildings. Found particularly in the Lincolnshire Edge and Limestone Edge villages. Orange-brown, silica-containing — cutting and repair generates RCS dust.
- Cleaning specification — low pressure for Lincoln Limestone and Cathedral fabric. Medium for red brick. Agricultural wash-down on the Lincolnshire clay plain must not reach the Witham, Brant or Fossdyke under Environmental Permitting.
