D&T and workshop dust extraction — COSHH compliance
Under COSHH, the school or college as employer has a legal duty to control teacher, technician and student exposure to wood dust, MDF dust and metallic dusts generated in Design and Technology workshops. Wood dust WEL is 5 mg/m³ (softwood) and 3 mg/m³ (hardwood) under EH40. MDF dust is 1 mg/m³ respirable. M-Class extraction is the minimum compliant specification for all woodworking. H-Class is required for sustained hardwood operations — hardwood dust is a Category 1A carcinogen.
