Cambridge — local materials and cleaning considerations

  • Cambridge Clunch (Totternhoe Stone) — a soft, white Cretaceous chalk limestone used in many of Cambridge's medieval colleges — Queens', King's, Clare and the older courts of the ancient university. Extremely soft and friable — highly sensitive to pressure washing. Any cleaning of Cambridge Clunch must be low-pressure water only with specialist conservation guidance.
  • Gault brick — pale buff or yellow brick made from Gault Clay — the characteristic Cambridge brick. Gives Cambridge's Victorian residential and commercial buildings their distinctive pale character. Medium pressure acceptable on sound Gault brick.
  • Cleaning specification — very low pressure for Clunch. Medium pressure for Gault brick. Cleaning runoff in central Cambridge must be contained — the Cam and its chalk stream tributaries are protected watercourses under Environmental Permitting.
